He was named All-State in 1997 and accepted a scholarship to play football at Furman University. In his junior year, he led his team to the 2001 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship Game, losing to Montana, 13–6. Napier earned second-team All-Southern Conference honors in 2001 and 2002.
