In the 2024 Pennsylvania primaries, ‘Squad’ member Rep. Summer Lee easily secures the nomination

Pennsylvanians cast their ballots in the Republican and Democratic primaries on Tuesday, with Rep. Summer Lee of the so-called progressive Squad of House legislators emerging victorious in the Democratic primary contest. The battle was eagerly observed by many.

After the Democratic Party’s nominations for the presidential race in November were announced, the focus shifted to the 12th Congressional District, one of seventeen Pennsylvania House seats up for grabs in November. Incumbent Lee easily defeated her opponent, Bhavini Patel, in the primary.

The state’s unofficial tally shows that 60% of the electorate voted for Lee, while 39% for Patel. Even though he faced no opposition, Republican James Hayes will face her.

Even though there were other factors at play, the race took center stage due to Lee’s prominence as an outspoken supporter of a Palestinian genocide and a strong advocate for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. To deliver military aid to Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine, she voted “no” on Saturday’s national security measures.

During his campaign, Patel had run along party lines, endorsing Biden. To justify her online reprimand of Lee, she tried to paint his vote against the packages as “woefully out of step with the values of our district and our state.”

Lee addressed the matter directly in the description of her victory speech livestream on X, writing: “Opposing genocide is good politics and good policy.”

In her remarks, she said that many had argued that “we could not be pro-peace and win in this district”; nonetheless, the outcome of the night demonstrated not only their opponents’ error but also the growth and inclusiveness of their progressive movement.

“We won’t be ashamed and we won’t put our heads down when we say that we want no more wars, when we say that people deserve dignity and human rights and self-determination whether they are Jewish or Muslim or Black or White or if they’re in Gaza or if they’re in Pakistan or if you’re in Haiti or if you’re in Sudan of if you’re in St. Louis or if you’re in New York,” according to her.

“Our movement is connecting the dots all over this world and we are calling for a just and lasting peace.”

Unofficial state statistics show that President Joe Biden received 93% of the vote, with Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who withdrew from the campaign in March, receiving the remaining 6%. This is despite the fact that the presidential nominees have already been announced.

Trump, a previous president, received 83% of the Republican vote, while South Carolina’s former governor Nikki Haley—who also withdrew in March—received over 16%.

Starting at 7 a.m. EDT, voters have until 8 p.m. to cast their ballots.

David McCormick, a Republican, is challenging Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey for reelection. Not a single opponent challenged either Casey or McCormick in their respective primaries.

On Tuesday, voters choose their candidates for a variety of state posts, including the attorney general’s position, which will be vacant due to the re-election of incumbent Democratic attorney general Michelle Henry.

Following the 2023 election of former attorney general Josh Shapiro as governor, Henry was nominated to the position.

With approximately 36% of the vote, Eugene DePasquale prevailed over four other candidates to secure the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

On Tuesday night, he said on X, “It’s official, we are the Dem nominee for attorney general!” Your confidence in me to lead the charge against #MAGA radicalism is deeply appreciated.

The extremist nativist political movement known as MAGA, popularized by Trump, is on the far right of the political spectrum.

Among Republicans, David Sunday easily defeated the lone challenger, Wendell Craig Williams, by a margin of 70% to 29%.

The Democratic nominee to face Republican State Treasurer Stacy Garrity is Erin McClelland, a mental health professional and government consultant who defeated former state lawmaker Ryan Bizzarro.

Compared to Bizzarro, who received 45% of the vote, McClelland received 54%, according to unofficial state data.

More than 8.7 million people are registered to vote in Pennsylvania, according to September figures from the Department of State. More than 3.8 million people are enrolled as Democrats, making them a slight majority. Roughly 1.2 million people identify as “other” or unaffiliated voters, whereas over 3.4 million identify as Republicans.

On the campaign trail for Republican and Democratic control of the House and Senate, races around the nation will be pivotal. A slim majority of senators are Democrats at the moment. Similarly, legislation has been difficult to pass in the past year due to the Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House.

One of the swing states that President Joe Biden won in 2020 was the Keystone State. To Biden, Scranton, Pennsylvania is home.
