Referee of the Rugby League Dennis Spagarino passed away on Monday, December 5, after battling motor neuron disease. He was 70 years old at the time of his demise.

Born in Italy and raised in North Sydney, Dennis Spagarino was a referee for the Rugby League, NRL grand finals, World cup finals, and state of origin. He was a life member of the Referees association and NSW Rugby League. 

He was also the chairman of the NSW referee’s association. He also coached junior referees for many years.

He was highly respected and greatly admired, according to NSWRL director Keith Greene.NSWRLRA Executive officer Greg McCallum stated that he cared for people and was approachable and considerate.

In 2000 Dennis was one of the first recipients of the Australian sports medal. Sadly he passed away after battling motor neuron disease on Monday, December 5. He was 70 years old at the time of his demise. He was survived by his wife and two daughters, and four grandchildren.
