Business Mogul Darrell S. Freeman dies at 57

The family of MTSU Board of Trustees vice-chair and former Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce Darrell Freemen announced his death in a statement given on Wednesday.

“Our beloved father and husband suffered from a serious illness that he lost on the evening of June 28, 2022,” the family said. “As we go through this difficult time, we ask for prayers and privacy.”

Many people from the business world have responded to Freeman’s death, including his longtime business partner Michael Carter. Carter said that he was working when he got the call about the demise of a freeman, and he couldn’t believe it.

MTSU released a statement mourning Freeman’s death, stating,” Our university community today mourns the passing away of alumnus and Trustee Darrell Freeman Sr., who will be remembered for his passion for creating opportunities for others, as well as his business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit.” 

“He was one of the MTSU’s most loved and brightest people, and his intelligence shines through his many accomplishments. A first-generation college; marvelous businessman who created his own IT company, Zycron, that, over 25 years, became a multimillion-dollar business that he later sold.”

Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce CEO and president Ralph Schulz said, “We are devastated by this loss for Darrell’s family and the community. He was a tremendous leader, and his impact will be felt for years and generations.” “Darrell was a mentor to many and was passionate about education. He embodied Nashville’s entrepreneurial spirit, paying and nurturing it forward. Our hearts are with his family and everyone he inspired.”

Jane Allen, CEO of Nashville Entrepreneur Center, released a statement reflecting Freeman’s legacy, “His legacy of generosity, mentorship, inclusion, and education will live on with all those he inspired,” Allen said. “Darrell embodied everything that the EC strives to achieve, he committed his time and resources to help entrepreneurs not just through the EC, but people within and beyond the Nashville community at large. Our condolences are with his family, friends, and everyone he inspired.”

His Achievements-

Darrell started his technology services company Zycron with office space the size of a closet in an incubator and later moved it to an office on North Nashville’s Clarksville Pike. It later grew on to be a 38 million dollars worth company. 

He sold it in 2017 for more than 20 million dollars. Recently, he was a mentor and investor to the trio who founded the restaurant chain Slim and Husky’s Pizza Beeria.

Freeman was a former chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce board and a member of the board of Middle Tennessee State University.
