He suffered a heart attack in 2012 and a severe stroke in 2020. After surviving a stroke in 2020, John retired from his regular on-air duties citing health problems.

In the beginning, he was a part-time announcer for the classic music program; later on, he got his show named ‘Eklektikos’ in 1970, which first aired on KUT and then moved to KUTX in 2013 when the radio station parted its channel into two frequencies for music and news respectively.
