About Shimada Yoko’s career
Shimada made her debut on television in the drama “Osanazuma” in the year 1970. She was born in 1953 in the city of Kumamoto, which is located on the southern island of Kyushu. She rose to prominence throughout the 1970s by playing morally upright characters on television and in films, including the smash hit “The Castle of Sand” from 1974.
About She was cast in the part of Mariko (aka Lady Toda Buntaro), the love interest of Richard Chamberlain’s shipwrecked British explorer turned samurai, which gave her one of the few English-speaking roles in “Shogun.” Despite her low English-language skills, she received one of the few English-speaking roles in the film. Despite this, Shimada was awarded her first and only Golden Globe for her portrayal of an aristocratic woman who sacrifices her life to save the life of her foreign lover.
The television show, which was based on a novel written by James Clavell, was a huge success in the United States. On the other hand, a theatrical production of it was shown in Japan, although it did poorly at the box office. Production credits were shared by the networks NBC, Paramount Television, and Asahi National Television, as well as the Toho Company and the trading firm Jardine Matheson.
After “Shogun” became a smash hit all over the world, Shimada tried his hand at various parts in Hollywood while simultaneously continuing to work in Japan, primarily on television. One such worldwide endeavour was the 1981 movie “Little Champion,” which starred Shimada in the starring role. The film was based on the life of Japanese-American marathoner Michiko “Miki” Suwa Gorman.
The fact that Shimada had an affair with the married rock musician Uchida Yuya, which became public knowledge, caused her to become engaged in a scandal. She was said to have struggled with alcoholism and had accumulated debts, both of which she attempted to pay off by appearing in a nude photo book in the year 1992. Despite the fact that the book was a huge success, it hurt her reputation as an actor. When she was featured in an adult video in 2011, she had kind of reached rock bottom by that point. Her most recent appearance on screen was in the Saiga Toshiro drama “Kanon” in 2016.
