Ricky Dubose, a 29-year-old Georgian recently sentenced to death for a 2005 escape attempt that killed two prison guards, committed suicide in prison, according to prison personnel.

Ricky Dubose allegedly killed himself by hanging. According to Putnam County Sheriff Howard R. Sill, Personnel from the Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed Dubose’s demise, according to the sheriff. The government left out the reason for death in a news release that was released on Sunday.

According to a news release from the Department of Corrections, at around 4:45 Sunday afternoon, corrections officers at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson found Ricky Dubose unresponsive in his cell. The guards started to help and made a call for medical aid. Dubose was pronounced deceased by the prison coroner at 5:56 p.m.

Dubose and another inmate named Donnie Rowe overpowered two guards, Curtis Billue and Christopher Monica, in a prison transport van, in June 2017, One of their weapons was used by Dubose to kill them. He and Rowe robbed a passer-by, escaped, and eventually made their way to Tennessee. Austin Swing, Bedford County Sheriff, said the detainees were kept locked up at the time and their clothes and belongings were taken. They turned themselves into a local man rather than authorities, according to law enforcement.
Although they were tried and found guilty individually, Dubose was given the death penalty because he was the one who really fired the shots. Rowe received a life sentence with no chance of parole. The legal representation for Dubose asserted in court that Rowe was in charge of their client’s behaviour and that the person had an intellectual handicap.
According to defence lawyer Gabrielle Pittman, “Ricky actually fired shots at people. However, you already know who was driving and who gave him the guns—that was Donnie.” Prosecutor T. Wright Barksdale, meanwhile, described Dubose as “an intelligent, calculated criminal.” The Billue and Monica victims’ families applauded the judgement and penalty imposed on Dubose.
