Former Democratic candidate for governor of Florida Andrew Gillum, who was narrowly defeated by Republican Ron DeSantis four years ago, is currently being investigated for alleged campaign fraud.
Andrew Gillum Wiki, Age, Biography
The fifth of seven children, 42-year-old Andrew Gillum was born in Miami and raised in Gainesville. He relocated to Tallahassee after receiving his Gainesville High School diploma so he could study political science at Florida A&M. In the Student Government Association, he held the offices of Senate President and SGA President from 2001 to 2002. He was the first trustee board member who was a student.
Gillum, who was elected to the Tallahassee City Commission at the age of 23, held that position for 11 years. In 2009, Gillum got married to R. Jai Howard, a fellow FAMU alum. They are parents of three kids.
What did Andrew Gillum do?
A federal grand jury has indicted Gillum and Sharon Lettman-Hicks on 21 counts, according to the U.S. Attorney for Florida’s Northern District. According to the accusation, between 2016 and 2019, Lettman-Hicks’ company and Gillum’s were improperly given campaign donations. She allegedly sent Gillum the money for his own use after passing it off as salary.
In a statement, attorneys for Gillum, Marc Elias, and David Oscar Markus said: “Today, the government made a mistake. The unambiguous evidence, in this case, will demonstrate Mr. Gillum’s innocence on all counts.”
What were the allegations against Andrew Gillum?
For Gillum, who was a rising figure in the Democratic party just four years ago, it’s yet another low moment. He was well-liked and personable as the former mayor of Tallahassee, but he had a long history of involvement with federal inquiries. His visits paid for by lobbyists and special interests came under criticism when he was mayor.
One of the allegations against Gillum relates to a trip to New York City in 2016 and tickets to the Broadway production of “Hamilton.” They were funded by a covert FBI agent who claimed to be a developer and requested Gillum’s assistance in approving projects. Gillum denied receiving anything of value from the alleged developer during later interviews with agents.
In March 2020, he was embroiled in a scandal involving drugs and $ex after suffering a razor-thin loss to DeSantis—by fewer than half a percentage point. A male $ex worker who overdosed on drugs was being treated in a hotel room in Miami Beach by paramedics. Although Gillum was reportedly unconscious and they had discovered drugs, no charges were brought against him. Later, Gillum said he was an alcoholic who had checked himself into a rehab facility.
