She went to The Chapin School, a Manhattan-based all-girls independent day school. As part of the SYA programme, she spent her junior year of high school in Beijing, China, studying Mandarin. She was now a member of the class of 2018 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Alana’s life was filled with love and enthusiasm, centred on her family and friends, as well as adventure and intellectual curiosity. Alana was an adventurous traveller who visited far-flung destinations such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, Turkey, and South America.

She moved to China at the age of sixteen for a year of language immersion and travel. She had a significant interest in and talent for mathematics early in her scholastic career, in addition to Mandarin. It became an important part of her academic career, which she continued until she arrived to Dartmouth in the autumn of 2013. Finally, Alana’s life was filled with fun and friends. She was a flurry of joy and enthusiasm, and her relationships with everyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with her reflected these characteristics.

In a eulogy at her burial in New York, her father, Ted Donahue, remarked, “She simply gave so much to so many in 20 whirlwind years of energy and sensitivity.”

“Despite all of her achievements, all of her extensive travels around the world to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Turkey, Egypt, Dubai, Brazil, and, most recently, Peru, all of her brilliance and beauty, it was her capacity to act as a messenger of goodness, happiness, and healing of others that ultimately defined her,” her father exclaimed.
